Wing Yu, Geotechnical EngineerSkip to contentHomeAboutResumeKaiser Sand Canyon Medical CenterPosted on September 12, 2010by wingyuThe Kaiser Permanente Orange County-Irvine Medical center, previously known as Kaiser Permanente Sand Canyon Medical Center, is the largest project, both in plan area and construction cost, I have ever done from conceptual stage thru construction stage.It all started with a site investigation for a 3 storey Medical Office Building (MOB) and ended up with a full blown medical center comprising a second MOB, a 6 Storey Hospital Building, a Central Utility Plant and a parking structure.I could brag about the fact that our soils report was reviewed and approved by the California Geological Survey (CGS) and the Office of Statewide Health and Planning Department (OSHPD) without major comments on its first submittal or the geotechnical design of the two level mat foundation connected with a 17 foot tall retaining/basement wall or the some 20 foot tall permanent soldier retaining wall….. May be another day, today I wish to share with you my experience as a visitor, not a geotechnical engineer, to the Irvine Medical center.Geotechnical engineers are usually the first one in and first one out of a construction project.Most of the time, we don’t have the chance to see the final product, unless we are invited for the opening ceremony. Several weeks ago, I visited the Irvine Medical Center as a working hospital for the first time. What impressed me most is the open courtyard garden located in the middle of the 2 Y-shaped patient towers.I found that the main entrance to the hospital to be extremely friendly, with lots of natural lighting and most importantly, for me, it is free of that typical hospital odor. My wife was a RN and worked at various hospitals in Hong Kong, England and Southern California. Also I lived in Switzerland for 11 years. What struck me most every time I visit the hospital where she works is that “hospital odor”. May be it is because visitors to a facility are generally far more sensitive to odors than its long-time occupants.Then I walked into the Cafeteria, which is the most people-friendly hospital Cafeteria I ever visited. Sitting either in-door or out in the open courtyard, you may forget for a moment that you are in a hospital. For me this is important, because I consider hospitals, with the exception of the maternity ward, are sad places. The natural lighting and the landscaping made this Cafeteria a thousand times better than those located in a basement or in a “windowless box”.
