In fact in a 2009 Harvard Business Review article, sustainability was described as the key driver for innovation and essential for achieving competitive advantage. Yet, another 2009 study by the Boston Consulting Group found that more than 70% of firms surveyed had not established the business case for sustainability nor really understood its impact on the enterprise.The generally agreed-upon definition of sustainability is "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own 
needs." Though most people think of this definition from an 
"eco" perspective, our view is that sustainability is not simply 
or only, about the environment. Rather, sustainability is more 
holistic; it's about how you run your enterprise. Indeed then, 
it is about leadership.
