The ASPCA® Rachael Ray™ $100K Challenge is a ground-breaking, national competition, created to help inspire shelters to increase the number of adoptions from the previous year. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is one of 47 shelters across the country, and one of two shelters in the state of Alabama to be competing, and the one that saves the most animals in June, July and August will win the grand prize, a $100,000 grant. During the month of June we found new homes for a total of 353 dogs and cats! Last June in 2012, we adopted 208 dogs and cats from the shelter. That's a 41% increase! The GBHS is currently ranked 17 out of 47, and fourth in its division of 10 contestants in the Challenge. GBHS Executive Director Karen Peterlin said, "We are very pleased with these numbers. I know that with the continued work of our volunteers, staff and community, we can finish the Challenge at a very high ranking. The important thing, though, is that our pets are finding homes." A BIG thank you to all the great folks who have already adopted one (or two) of our pets! See the photo gallery of our latest adoptees. Now it's your turn to help save a life! Come see us to meet all the adorable animals at the shelter and add a new member to your family. Seniors, find your perfect pet here! Medical professionals often speak of the health benefits of a companion pet for an older individual. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society has a special program, Seniors for Seniors, that offers a great way to match personalities and help find forever homes for older pets. Any senior citizen (age 55+) can adopt a dog or cat, five or more years old, from the shelter for only $25. Won't you consider giving one of our wonderful senior pets a new home? Click here to find a lovable mature companion just for you! We want YOU to become a GBHS Foster Parent We all want to save more lives each year. And the number of animals we can save depends on the how many people will open their hearts and homes to foster them. Young kittens and puppies need foster care until they are old enough to be spayed and neutered, and are then ready to be adopted. Adult pets who are injured, undergoing heartworm treatment, or have recently given birth need foster care until they are well enough to find their forever homes. You can give these special pets a second chance at life b
