The exhibit hours will be Wednesday through Saturday, 1pm to 6pm, and Sundays, 1pm to 5pm. The exhibit will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Wild Land brochure accompanying the exhibit tells of Cole's importance to the history of American art: "The opening of the Erie Canal in October 1825 marked a critical milestone in America's mastery of its wildness. By linking New York City to the Great Lakes of the Midwest, the canal fostered the growth of frontier urban outposts, such as, Detroit and Chicago. At just about this moment, a native tourism industry began to bloom, facilitated by overland transportation, such as, the steamboat and (soon) the railroad." "Thomas Cole's timing was perfect. Artists such as Cole both manifested and drove the new public taste... He was from England where landscapes had been widely celebrated in art and literature since the late 1700s. And there on the American frontier, he transferred his affection for the Lancashire countryside to the vaster and more feral landscape of the Midwest." -- Thomas Cole, "Essay on American Scenery," 1836 Along with the regular exhibit times, the library will host a series of related programs: Thursday, April 10 at 7pm: "Thomas Cole and His Wilderness" by Dr. Allison Sauls, associate professor of art history, MWSU. Saturday, April 19 at 1pm: "American Landscape Artists from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art" by Dr. Stephanie Knappe, associate curator of American art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Saturday, May 3 at 1pm: "Hidden Political Messages in the Landscape Paintings of Thomas Cole and George Caleb Bingham" by Dr. Joan Stack, curator of art collections, State Historical Society of Missouri. Thursday, May 8 at 7pm: "Landscape Photography Tips by Master Photographers" by Rebecca Foley, assistant professor of art, photography, MWSU. The library also has several books available about Cole and the Hudson River school. Try The Life and Works of Thomas Cole by Louis Noble for more background on the artist or Intimate Friend
