Since January 2002 we have been collecting data on all suspected and confirmed congenital anomalies identified in utero, at birth or in childhood. We include any anomaly newly diagnosed up to a child's 18th birthday. In addition to live births and stillbirths affected by anomalies we also collect data on all terminations and miscarriages where an anomaly is present. We aim to provide an accurate source of data on congenital anomalies to aid surveillance of birth defects and to act as a resource for research, audit and service planning. Since April 2013 SWCAR is funded by Public Health England and covers the population of Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, Bristol, North Somerset, Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and Northeast Somerset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. SWCAR is a member of BINOCAR the British Isles Network of Congenital Anomaly Registers.
