The International Conference on the European Electricity Market is a premier forum to discuss the development of the energy sector in a market environment and the creation of the common European electricity market. It has achieved a considerable success during the past editions, held in Poland, covering the electricity and gas markets policies and experiences, climate change impact on the sector, renewable energies and new developments at the European level. The EEM 08 comprises plenary sessions on the first and second days (May 28, 29) with keynote speakers from the main European institutions, market agents and prominent academics, which will provide their views on the main topics of the conference: European electricity market: key policies Hedging risk in electricity markets Integration of intermittent energy sources in the grid Transmission networks in a market environment European electricity market: key experiences White and green tradable certificates Climate change The Iberian electricity market The third day (May 30) is focused on the latest research with the presentation and discussion of scientific papers. The EEM 08 has received a record of 218 communications from 33 countries, from which 147 were accepted for presentation after a rigorous reviewing process by the Scientific Committee. These papers will be presented in 20 oral sessions divided in 5 parallel sessions and a poster session during the coffee breaks of the third day. In recognition for the high standard of the EEM conference the IEEE/PES has become this year the conference co‑sponsor and will publish the accepted papers in the IEEE Xplore. Following the previous editions tradition the EEM 08 promotes the Competition for the best PhD papers which provides the opportunity for young researchers to present their work in the international forum. The three best papers will receive special awards at the EEM 08 gala dinner. I hope that you profit as much as possible from such an arena for free discussion and debate among experts, which will give all of us the opportunity to share different views about the energy markets that are today key issues in many ways.
