There are nearly 13 million Blind/Partially Sighted peoples which means one out of 80 Indian is either Blind or partially Sighted. And other estimate puts the number of low vision cases at 28 million. In order to solve the critical problems faced by the Blind, The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) was set up in 1970 in India.THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND MAHARASHTRA (NFBM)The NFBM is one of the registered Social Organization, which is “of the Blind”, “For the Blind” & successfully run “By the Blind”. It is the single largest self-helping democratic Organization of the Blind, representing 7 to 8 Lac visually handicapped people of the Maharashtra State. It is struggling to strive for equality of opportunity for blind in their education, training & employment. It has several schemes & projects are in the offering by the Federation for the upliftment of our fellow blind brotheren; especially those who stay away in rural areas of the State through the branches, units & service centres situated at Mumbai (H.Q.), Pune, Nasik, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Amravati, Nanded, Jalana, Jalgaon, Latur & AhmednagarThere are various projects & schemes towards the welfare of the Blind such as Jagriti School for Blind Girls, Braille Transcription Unit, Braille Books Library, Placement Services Scheme for Blind, Students Aid, Vocational Training & Guidance Counseling Service at Nasik & Aurangabad, Self Employment Aid, Braille Jagriti & Charchoughi Magazine etc.NFBM JAGRITI SCHOOL FOR BLIND GIRLSEducation, Training & Rehabilitation these are the three most necessary things to every blind individual for the betterment of their life. There are about 50 schools available in Maharashtra State for the education of Blind. Unfortunately not more than 2,500 blind Children are taking education in these schools. Considering the situation, NFBM started “Jagriti School for Blind Girls” on January 4, 1989.This school is situated at Alandi Dev, Dist. Pune. At present 107 blind girls are housed in this school. Most of them are from the rural areas of Pune, Marathwada, Vidarbha & Khandesh. The school being residential in nature, students are provided to them free of cost. Regular academic coaching is given to children here alongwith provision for learning extra curricular skills like vocational training, craft, sports training & cultural skills. Home Science and Music Classes are specialities of the School. This school offers education upto the 7th standard in its own special school alongwith formal education.
